In the recent COVID-19 outbreak, there is an increase in the demand for surgical masks, decreasing the supplies across the globe. In Japan, the Philippines, and Korea, surgical masks are sold out. Surgical masks aim to prevent someone from getting the virus. However, most doctors say that when the mask is worn incorrectly and with improper hygiene, there is still a chance of getting infected. Hence, they only recommend surgical masks to people who are sick.

Do surgical masks lessen the chance of getting infected or do they increase the chance of getting it instead?
