Summary:

It makes sense, normal cognitive aging occurs due to changes in brain structure. However, is there a way to combat this? Are there 'anti-aging' exercises for the brain?

For example, conceptual reasoning and visual construction could be combatted with by playing video games.

Per the Harvard Health Blog, these are the ways to keep the brain young

  • Mental stimulation exercises, like reading, completing puzzles and taking courses can help the brain "make new cells" and maintain neuroplasticity by creating new neural pathways.

  • Getting physical exercises - running, jogging, walking, abs

  • Getting good nutrition. Especially important is having a Mediterranean-style diet which emphasizes eating vegetables, fruits, fish, plant sources of proteins

  • Minimizing blood pressure is key. Factors that contribute to high blood pressure include eating right, keeping fit and lean and avoiding stress in midlife.

  • Keeping an eye on the blood sugar is another important factor.

  • Avoiding cigarettes (duh) and ALL tobacco products.
